Data collection

Whale watching trips are a unique opportunity to obtain data that will increase knowledge about the animals and their environment and therefore have a positive impact on their conservation.

Better knowledge of cetaceans and the generation of environmental awareness are mechanisms of action for the activity to be developed in a sustainable way, which has a positive impact on the socio-economic development of the area.

Turmares Tarifa combines this philosophy with a service of absolute quality, making an extra effort to show users the beauties of the Strait of Gibraltar, as well as to awaken a wealth of emotions as a result of the encounter with these mythical animals.

In all our trips, data is systematically collected. This collection is carried out according to the protocols established by the Spanish Cetacean Society (Sociedad Española de Cetáceos, SEC).

Identification photo

Technique that allows us to identify individuals through their natural markings.
using exclusively photography.
It is a very useful tool for studies of population size, population viability, habitat use, survival, movements and reproduction.

Photo-ID has a number of advantages over other survey techniques.

  • Not very invasive, as the animals do not have to be captured or marked.
  • Accessible and low cost.
  • It allows the creation of catalogues of individuals to monitor populations and to study the group fidelity of individuals recognised as belonging to the same group and associations.
  • Establish migratory routes, in the case of migratory species, by comparing catalogues from different areas.
  • Estimate population size, establish ages at sexual maturation, breeding intervals, length of parental cure, reproductive age and even longevity if monitored over a long period of time.
